Most home businesses start with an Instagram story and a quiet hope. Sweet Crumbs Cookies & Treats is the kind that proves it can work — built one cookie set at a time by Ariga, a San Fernando Valley mom-of-two who turned her son's first birthday baking project into a thriving Armenian-owned business.
Her hand-decorated sugar cookies show up at Atam Hatik celebrations, baby showers, weddings, and just about every milestone that deserves something edible and beautiful. We sat down with Ariga to talk about how Sweet Crumbs got started, what really goes into a custom order, and why every cookie is a piece of edible art.
Q&A with Ariga, Founder of Sweet Crumbs Cookies & Treats
My very first batch of decorated cookies was for my son's first birthday and Atam Hatik celebration. I remember having so much fun making them. Looking back now, they definitely weren't my best work (although at the time I thought they looked amazing 😅), but I loved the entire process.
That experience made me want to keep going — not because they were perfect, but because I realized how much I enjoyed creating, experimenting with icing colors, and seeing ideas come to life. I wanted to keep practicing and see how much I could improve.
The moment everything shifted was during the holiday season. I had made some Christmas cookies and decided to casually post them on my stories to see if anyone would be interested in ordering. I truly wasn't expecting much, but the response surprised me.
Friends and family started reaching out and placing orders, and the feedback was so encouraging and positive. That's when I realized this could become more than just a hobby — it could actually turn into a business.
I do have an art background and I've always been a creative person. Decorating cookies feels a lot like creating art to me, which is probably why I fell in love with it so quickly. While I didn't have formal cookie decorating training, a lot of what I've learned came from practicing, experimenting, and developing my own style over time.
It really depends on the theme and complexity of the designs, but a typical two-dozen custom order can take anywhere from 2 to 9+ hours from start to finish. There's a lot more involved than people realize — from designing concepts and preparing dough to baking, decorating, drying time, packaging, and all the little details in between.
That's a great question! I think the biggest surprise for people is just how time-consuming the process actually is. Decorating is only one piece of it. There's planning, color mixing, baking, outlining, layering, drying time, packaging, and making sure every detail comes together beautifully.
Cookie decorating truly is edible art — and every order is created with so much time and care.
When I started Sweet Crumbs, I had two under two — working a full-time remote job. It was definitely busy and chaotic at times! But cookie decorating became my creative outlet and a way for me to carve out time for myself.
I'd spend a couple hours decorating each day and really enjoy that creative escape. Of course, I couldn't have done it without my husband's support — it's truly been a team effort from the beginning.
One of the most memorable orders I've ever made was my very first wedding order. If I remember correctly, it was 12 dozen cookies — and I booked it literally the month after launching Sweet Crumbs. I was equal parts excited and nervous.
I couldn't believe a couple trusted me with such a meaningful part of their special day. It gave me so much confidence and reminded me that taking chances can lead to amazing opportunities.
Yes! I've done quite a few Armenian-themed sets, especially Atam Hatik celebrations — which are actually some of my favorite orders to create. They're always so meaningful and fun to design, and I love knowing my cookies get to be part of such special milestones and family traditions.
I always recommend booking sooner rather than later to ensure availability. These days, most events are booked about 2–3 months in advance. That said, I do occasionally take last-minute orders when my schedule allows — especially for my OG customers who have supported Sweet Crumbs since day one!
About Ariga & Sweet Crumbs
Hi, I'm Ariga — a wife, a mama to two sweet boys, and the hands and heart behind Sweet Crumbs Cookies & Treats.
What started as a simple hobby quickly became so much more than I ever imagined. Cookie decorating became my creative outlet — a space where I could combine my love for baking, art, color, detail, and design into something beautiful (and delicious!). What began as creating cookies for my son's first birthday and Atam Hatik celebration slowly grew into a passion, and little by little turned into the business I'm so incredibly grateful for today.
I've always been a creative person, and through Sweet Crumbs I discovered just how much I love bringing ideas to life through detailed designs, florals, and especially baby-themed sets (those will always have a special place in my heart 🤍).
One of the greatest parts of this journey has been connecting with so many amazing customers and being trusted to create for some of life's sweetest milestones and celebrations.
