POETRY, TRAUMATIC HISTORY, MEMORY: THINKING ABOUT THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE Peter Balakian on the Armenian Genocide and his work, and on how trauma moves between generations. He looks at the ancestors who gave his writing its foundation: his great-great uncle Krikoris Balakian, a bishop of the Armenian Church and one of the 250 cultural leaders arrested on April 24, 1915, and his grandmother Nafina Shekerlemedjian, who survived the death march into the Syrian desert with her two young daughters.
