The Armenian Alphabet: All 39 Letters With Pronunciation

One man invented it, in one go, in 405 AD. Every letter has one sound, and Armenian is read exactly as it is written. Here is the full alphabet, with how each letter sounds in both Eastern and Western Armenian.

Where it came from

Most alphabets drift into being over centuries. Armenian did not. Around 405 AD a monk and scholar named Mesrop Mashtots designed one, deliberately, with the backing of Catholicos Sahak Partev and King Vramshapuh.

The reason was practical. Armenia had adopted Christianity in 301 AD, but scripture was read in Greek and Syriac, languages ordinary Armenians did not speak, and the country was being pulled apart between the Persian and Byzantine empires. A written Armenian meant the church could teach in the language people actually used, and it meant the culture had something that could not be taken away.

Mashtots is still a national figure in Armenia, and there is more on his life and work here.

The first sentence translated into the new alphabet was from the Book of Proverbs: to know wisdom and instruction, to perceive the words of understanding. Within a generation the Bible had been translated, schools were open, and a written literature existed where there had been none. Armenians still mark the achievement with a holiday, the Feast of the Holy Translators.

Every letter, sound by sound

Eastern Armenian is the standard in Armenia and Iran. Western Armenian is spoken across most of the diaspora, including Los Angeles. The letters are the same in both; several of the sounds are not.

A note on order. This is the modern 39-letter order. In the classical alphabet the letter ւ (hiwn) sat in position 34 and carried the value 7000. The 1922 to 1924 spelling reform dropped it as an independent letter and put ու (u) in its place, which is why the numeral column skips 7000.

Eastern and Western, the same letters sounding different

If you learn one branch and then hear the other, this is the shift that trips people up. Six pairs of consonants swap voicing between the two.

It is the reason the same name is written Bedros by one family and Petros by another, and why Dikran and Tigran are the same name. Neither spelling is wrong.

The letters that came later

Mashtots made 36 letters, enough for every sound in the Armenian of his day. Three additions since then bring the count to 39.

Օ օo
Added in the Middle Ages for the o sound in words borrowed from other languages.
Ֆ ֆfe
Added at the same time. Armenian had no f of its own, so loanwords had been written with p.
ու ուu
Always written as two characters, but counted as one letter since the 1922 to 1924 reform.
ևyev
The Armenian word for “and”, originally a shorthand joining two letters. It has no capital form: at the start of a sentence it is written out as two letters.

Letters that are also numbers

Before Arabic numerals reached Armenia, the 36 original letters did double duty as a number system. The order is what makes it work: the first nine letters are 1 to 9, the next nine are 10 to 90, the next nine are 100 to 900, and the last nine are 1000 to 9000. You read a number by adding its letters together.

ԼՄԵ is 30 + 60 + 3, which is 93. ՉԴ is 100 + 4, which is 104.

The system is still in plain sight on khachkars, church walls, manuscript pages and gravestones, which is how dates on centuries-old Armenian monuments are read.

If you are learning it

A few things that make the alphabet easier than it looks:

  • One letter, one sound. There is almost no English-style guesswork. Once you know a letter, you know it everywhere it appears.
  • Learn the pairs together. Several letters differ only by a puff of air, like Մ and Ք. Practising them side by side fixes both faster than learning them apart.
  • Watch the word-initial rule. Ե is read “ye” at the start of a word and “e” elsewhere. Ո is read “vo” at the start and “o” elsewhere.
  • Write by hand. The cursive forms differ enough from print that copying them out is what makes the shapes stick.
  • Pick a branch first. Decide whether you are learning Eastern or Western and stay with it until you can read comfortably. Mixing them early is what causes most confusion.

Common questions

How many letters are in the Armenian alphabet?

Thirty-nine today. Mesrop Mashtots created it with 36 around 405 AD. The letters o and fe were added in the Middle Ages for sounds borrowed from other languages, and the 1922 to 1924 spelling reform made u and yev separate letters while dropping hiwn as a letter of its own.

Who created the Armenian alphabet and why?

Mesrop Mashtots, a monk and scholar, with the backing of Catholicos Sahak Partev and King Vramshapuh. The aim was to translate scripture into Armenian so the church could teach in the language people actually spoke, and to hold the culture together under Persian and Byzantine pressure.

What is the difference between Eastern and Western Armenian pronunciation?

The letters are identical, the sounds are not. Several consonant pairs swap: ben is b in Eastern and p in Western, gim is g in Eastern and k in Western, da is d in Eastern and t in Western. Eastern Armenian is spoken in Armenia and Iran, Western Armenian across most of the diaspora.

Do Armenian letters have number values?

Yes. The 36 original letters doubled as numbers before Arabic numerals arrived. The first nine stand for 1 through 9, the next nine for 10 through 90, the next nine for 100 through 900, and the last nine for 1000 through 9000. The system still appears on monuments, manuscripts and church inscriptions.

Is the Armenian alphabet hard to learn?

It takes longer than a Latin alphabet because every shape is new, but it is consistent. Each letter has one sound and words are read as they are written. Most learners can sound out written Armenian within a few weeks, even before they know what the words mean.
