Who Is Eric Bogosian?

Eric Bogosian was born on April 24, 1953, in Woburn, Massachusetts, to Armenian American parents. The date of his birth — April 24 — is Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day, a coincidence that Bogosian has described as deeply significant to his sense of identity and purpose. He grew up in a close-knit Armenian community in the Boston suburbs, where the memory of the Genocide was a constant presence in family conversations and community life.

Bogosian studied at the University of Chicago and Oberlin College before moving to New York, where he became one of the most important voices in downtown theater during the 1980s. His explosive, confrontational one-man shows — performed in tiny Off-Broadway spaces — combined stand-up, performance art, and theater in a way that had never been seen before. He brought a raw, unflinching intensity to the stage that drew comparisons to Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor.

His Armenian Heritage

Bogosian's Armenian identity runs deep through his work. Born on the very date that Armenians worldwide pause to remember the Genocide, he has said the collision of his birthday with the day of mourning gave him an early sense that Armenian history was inseparable from his personal story.

His most direct engagement with Armenian history came with Operation Nemesis (2015), a nonfiction book that tells the true story of the secret Armenian operation to hunt down and assassinate the architects of the Genocide in the years following World War I. The book brought this little-known chapter of history to a mainstream American audience and was widely praised for its narrative power and historical rigor.
