Who Is Shavo Odadjian?

Shavo Odadjian was born on April 22, 1974, in Yerevan, in the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. His family emigrated when he was nine years old, settling in Glendale, California — home to one of the largest Armenian diaspora communities in the world. Growing up immersed in both Armenian culture and the rock music of Los Angeles, Odadjian developed into one of the most dynamic bassists in modern heavy metal.

In 1994, Odadjian co-founded System of a Down in Glendale with guitarist Daron Malakian, vocalist Serj Tankian, and drummer John Dolmayan. He brought the band together, served as a key connector in the early years, and developed a bass style known for its groove, power, and ability to anchor some of the most unusual and unpredictable riff structures in rock music. SOAD went on to become one of the best-selling rock acts of the 2000s, selling over 35 million albums worldwide.

Born in Yerevan, Made in Glendale

Shavo Odadjian is one of the few major rock stars actually born in Armenia. His journey from Yerevan to Glendale to the world stage mirrors the story of thousands of Armenian families who built new lives in Southern California — and his success has made him a source of pride for the Armenian community worldwide. He has spoken openly about how his Armenian identity shaped his music, his values, and his commitment to the band's Genocide awareness work.

Career & Music

System of a Down released their self-titled debut in 1998, followed by the landmark albums Toxicity (2001) and Mezmerize/Hypnotize (2005). Toxicity debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and produced some of the most recognizable songs of the early 2000s. Odadjian's bass work on tracks like "B.Y.O.B.," "Chop Suey!," and "Aerials" helped define the band's sound — dense, rhythmically complex, and grounded in a propulsive low-end that held together the band's wild structural shifts.

Beyond his bass playing, Odadjian has been deeply involved in visual art and photography, and has collaborated with artists across multiple creative fields. He also co-founded the cannabis lifestyle brand Loud + Clear, reflecting interests that extend well beyond music.
