Museums and Galleries in Yerevan

For a city of around a million, Yerevan carries a disproportionate amount of museum weight, largely because so much of what survived of Armenian material culture ended up concentrated here. The Matenadaran alone holds one of the world’s great manuscript collections, and the Genocide Museum and Memorial at Tsitsernakaberd is the reason many diaspora visitors come at all.

What to see

Planning your visits

Several institutions close on Mondays and some on Sundays as well, so check before building a day around one. Most are inexpensive by European standards and many offer guided tours in English and Russian worth taking, particularly at the Matenadaran where the manuscripts need explaining to mean anything. Allow more time at Tsitsernakaberd than you think, including the walk up and the memorial itself.

Beyond the big names

The smaller house-museums are the ones people remember: Sergei Parajanov’s, which is as strange and good as his films, the Yeghishe Charents and Hovhannes Tumanyan houses, and the Cafesjian Center built into the Cascade. The Cascade is free to walk and the sculpture garden at its base is open at all hours, which makes it the easiest thing in the city to do on a spare evening.
