Where to eat in Yerevan, from the tonir bread and khorovats of the central district to Western Armenian and Artsakh kitchens and third-wave coffee.
Yerevan's dining is concentrated in Kentron, the central district, and much of it is walkable from Republic Square. Tumanyan Street alone carries Lavash, Gata Tavern, Kamancha, Tumanyan's Khinkali and Tumanyan Shaurma within a few blocks of each other. Amiryan, Abovyan, Pushkin and Teryan streets fill in most of the rest, and the Cascade area holds the rooftop rooms with views toward Mount Ararat.
Dolmama on Pushkin Street is the long-standing fine-dining room for Armenian cooking. Sherep on Amiryan and the Tavern Yerevan group, which runs several locations across the city, cover the mid-range: dolma, khorovats, harissa and ghapama. Vostan on Abovyan keeps a working tonir and bakery in view of the dining room, so the bread arrives straight out of the clay oven.
Some of the most interesting kitchens in Yerevan cook something other than standard Yerevan fare. Anteb, just off Northern Avenue, serves Western Armenian food from Aintab, with iskender kebab and a manti soup locals rate above any other in the city. Machar 44 near Spendiaryan Street specialises in Artsakh dishes including zhengyalov hatz. Babylon on Pavstos Buzand is built around the Iraqi-Armenian community and fuses Armenian staples with Levantine plates.
Lumen on Teryan Street roasts its own beans in house and is one of the reliably non-smoking rooms downtown. Coffeestory keeps prices low and a smoking section. Gotcha Cafe runs juice and smoothie counters across Kentron and in most of the city's malls, which is the easiest option if you are moving between neighbourhoods.
Prices are in Armenian dram and a full meal at a mid-range Kentron restaurant typically runs well under what the equivalent would cost in Los Angeles. Most central restaurants stay open to midnight, English menus are common in Kentron, and card payment is widely accepted. Many places keep an outdoor terrace open through the warm months.
