Andranik Ozanian — known simply as 'Our Andranik' — was the most celebrated Armenian military commander of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a guerrilla leader, freedom fighter, and symbol of Armenian resistance who devoted his entire life to the protection of his people.
Andranik Toros Ozanian was born on February 25, 1865, in Shabin-Karahisar in the Ottoman Empire (in present-day Turkey). He grew up amid the oppression of Armenians under Ottoman rule and as a young man joined the Armenian fedayee movement — armed resistance fighters who defended Armenian villages from massacres and raids. He became the most famous and feared of these fighters, a guerrilla commander of extraordinary tactical skill and personal bravery.
Over a career spanning four decades, Andranik fought in the Hamidian massacres of the 1890s, the Adana massacre of 1909, the Balkan Wars of 1912–1913, and World War I, where he commanded the Armenian volunteer units fighting alongside Russian forces. He is credited with saving tens of thousands of Armenian lives through his military campaigns, and is remembered across the Armenian diaspora simply as "Մեր Անդրանիկ" — "Our Andranik."
Andranik became a legend in his own lifetime — a warrior-hero whose courage and commitment to Armenian survival made him a mythic figure. Songs were written about him, children were named after him, and his image was kept in Armenian homes like a saint. He is one of the only historical figures who is revered equally by Armenians in Armenia, the diaspora in the United States, and Armenian communities worldwide.
Andranik's military career began in the 1890s when he joined the Armenakan and later the Dashnak (Armenian Revolutionary Federation) fedayees resisting Ottoman oppression. He became famous for his defense of Armenian villages in the Sasun region against Ottoman and Kurdish attacks. His reputation grew during the 1904 Battle of Arakial, where a small force of fighters held off a much larger Ottoman force for months.
During World War I, Andranik commanded Armenian volunteer battalions fighting alongside the Russian army in eastern Anatolia. As the Russian army withdrew following the 1917 Revolution, he continued fighting, protecting the retreating Armenian population. In 1918, he formed the Armenian Special Striking Division and fought to defend Armenians in Zangezur (present-day Syunik, Armenia) against Ottoman and Azerbaijani attacks.
After the consolidation of Soviet power in the Caucasus, Andranik emigrated. He traveled through Europe and eventually settled in the United States, living in Fresno, California — then home to a large Armenian American community. He died there on August 31, 1927, and was mourned across the Armenian world. His remains were later repatriated to Armenia.
