Maro Markarian (1915–1999) was one of Armenia's most cherished lyric poets. Born in the Armenian village of Shulaver in Georgia, she studied at Yerevan State University and gave her life to poetry that spoke quietly and honestly — about love, motherhood, conscience, and the small mercies of everyday life.
Where many poets of the Soviet era wrote loudly for the state, Markarian's voice stayed intimate and human. That sincerity made her one of the most widely read and loved poets in Armenia; her poems were set to music, memorized in schools, and translated across the Soviet Union.
Her poems feel less like literature and more like a trusted voice speaking truth gently.
