Tigran Hamasyan was born on July 17, 1987, in Gyumri, Armenia (then part of the Soviet Union). He showed an extraordinary musical gift from childhood, teaching himself to play piano by ear before receiving formal training. He studied at the Yerevan State Conservatory and came to international attention in 2006 when, at just 19 years old, he won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition in Washington D.C. — one of the most important awards in jazz.
What makes Hamasyan unique is not just his technical virtuosity but his singular musical vision. He fuses Armenian folk songs and modal scales with jazz harmony and improvisation, adding elements of progressive rock, electronic music, and ancient Armenian church music.
