The National Armenian School of Kuwait, whose high school section is known as the Azkayin Jemaran, was founded in 1960 by brothers Vigen and Arshavir Shaghzo with community backing, and moved to new premises in 1972. It was Kuwait’s first Armenian school and teaches kindergarten through grade 12 to roughly 300 students with about 25 full time teachers. It is the only foreign institution in Kuwait permitted to include religion in its curriculum. Enrolment peaked near 700 in the mid 1980s and fell to 90 after the 1991 war before recovering. The school publishes Oasis and Dzidzernag and operates under the Prelacy, which handles enquiries.
