The History Museum of Armenia, founded in 1919 and located on Republic Square in the heart of Yerevan, is the nation's principal museum of history and culture. Its collections trace Armenia's past from prehistoric and Bronze Age sites through the kingdom of Urartu, the medieval period, and into modern times. Highlights include ancient petroglyphs, metalwork, wagons and a leather shoe among the world's oldest, cuneiform inscriptions, coins, carpets, and ethnographic treasures. The museum shares its building with the National Gallery of Armenia, making Republic Square the single best stop for understanding the sweep of Armenian history and identity.
