About an hour west of Yerevan near the village of Araks, the Sardarapat Memorial commemorates the 1918 Battle of Sardarapat, the decisive victory that secured the survival and independence of the Armenian nation. The striking complex of red tufa winged bulls, an eagle-lined avenue, and a bell tower stands beside the National Museum of Armenian Ethnography and the History of the Liberation Movement, which holds more than 70,000 items — carpets, costumes, woodwork, ceramics, and folk art from across the historic Armenian homeland. Together the memorial and museum make one of Armenia's most moving day trips.
